Medical Trainee Program
Lakeridge Health partners with a number of medical schools to deliver professional development opportunities to future Medical Staff. Annually, Lakeridge welcomes more than 300 medical trainees across all of our five sites. Academic Affairs ask that you give at least 2 months of advanced notice to allow set up for your elective or observership.
Positions are available to:
- Undergraduate Medical Students
- Post-Graduate Residents
- Fellows
- Midwifery Students
Placements include: anesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, emergency medicine, family and community medicine, gastroenterology, general and thoracic surgery, geriatrics, haematology & oncology, ICU, internal medicine, laboratory medicine, nephrology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic surgery, opthalmology, otolaryngology, pediatrics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, psychiatry, respirology, rheumatology, urology. Electives are dependent on the availability of preceptors.

Student Practicum Program
Nursing
Lakeridge Health welcomes the knowledge and contribution of more than 900 nursing students annually from accredited universities and colleges with an affiliation agreement. Academic Affairs ask that you give at least 2 months of advanced notice to allow set up for your placement. We provide a wide range of placement opportunities to:
- RPN students including all semester and pre-grad
- level 1, 2,3 and 4 BScN students
- those enrolled in a graduate programs including Masters, NP, and PHD
- those completing continuing education
Opportunities for nursing students are available, but not limited to the following areas: cardiology, critical care, emergency, employee and occupational health, general medical surgical nursing, internal medicine, infection and prevention control, mental health, neurology, nursing informations, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, orthopedics, outpatient clinics, palliative care, perioperative nursing, professional practice, respirology.

Clinical
Lakeridge Health offers a wide range of placement opportunities to students in clinical disciplines, with more than 400 clinical students coming to Lakeridge annually. Academic Affairs ask that you give at least 2 months of advanced notice to allow set up for your placement.
Placement opportunities are available but not limited to the following disciplines: Anesthesiology Assistants, Infection Control Practitioners, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiation Technology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Pharmacy, Personal Support Work, Registered Dieticians, Radiation Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Social Work, Speech Language Pathology.

Non-Clinical
Lakeridge Health values non-clinical students, and recognizes them as an important part of our team. Practical experiences are available in a wide range of services and programs here at Lakeridge for students with a non-direct focus. Placement types include, but are not limited to: Office Administration, Bio-Medical Engineering, Environmental Services, Human Resources, Business and Accounting, Health Administration, Engineering, Management and Administration. Academic Affairs ask that you give at least 2 months of advanced notice to allow set up for your placement.

Job Shadowing
To gain a better understanding of the role and function of a particular discipline, students can job shadow a staff member for a specified and limited time period. Academic Affairs asks that you give at least 2 months of advanced notice to allow set up for your Observership.
Available to:
students currently registered with a college or university who are interested in gaining exposure to a particular discipline who are not currently completing a required practicum
Important information for applicants
- job shadowing opportunities are limited and subject to prior approval
- duration of job shadowing experience will generally not exceed 8 hours in total
- student observers must either be a student volunteer at Lakeridge Health OR over 18 years of age AND must be registered with a college or university
- job shadowing opportunity is strictly observational, no direct patient care is permitted, and as this is not part of any curriculum, there would not be any performance to be evaluated
- to participate in a job shadowing opportunity, individuals are encouraged to find their own preceptor. Academic Affairs will send a request on behalf of the Medical Trainee.
- application for a job shadowing experience includes: a CV, confirmation of up-to-date immunizations and other requirements.
