New Partner in Planning, Design, and Conformance (PDC) Revealed

(Durham Region) – May 14, 2024 – Lakeridge Health is pleased to announce Stantec has been selected to lead the Planning, Design, and Conformance (PDC) aspects of Lakeridge Health’s much-anticipated Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment, one of Lakeridge Health’s largest redevelopment projects to date.

In alignment with Lakeridge Health’s vision, One System. Best Health., the redeveloped Bowmanville Hospital will usher in a new era of health-care delivery in Durham Region. This transformative initiative will enhance health-care access in Clarington and across the region by adding more beds, expanding critical care services, and introducing state-of-the-art facilities like an Ambulatory Care and Haemodialysis Centre. The redeveloped hospital will also include:

  • An expansion, nearly double in size, to meet the health-care needs of the rapidly growing Durham Region.
  • Modern patient-centred design, including private rooms and bariatric rooms.
  • A new parking garage, supporting more convenient access for patients, visitors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Additional green space enhancing the overall well-being of patients, visitors, and the community alike.

"We’re thrilled to partner with Stantec on this journey," said Cynthia Davis, President and CEO, Lakeridge Health. "Stantec’s expertise in health-care infrastructure will be invaluable as we breathe life into our vision for the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project. With Stantec by our side, from fine-tuning the master site plan to guiding construction and beyond, we're poised to create a cutting-edge hospital that's tailored to our community's evolving needs. Together, we're forging a path toward a brighter, healthier future for the residents of Durham Region."

Stantec’s involvement in the project represents just one of the many recent advancements in the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project:

  • Engagement Sessions with Lakeridge Health Teams Underway: Together with Stantec, the Lakeridge Health team has been actively engaging with nearly 30 diverse user groups, including clinical teams, volunteers, and hospital administration, to gather input on the specifications for the redeveloped hospital. As we progress through 2024, these consultations will play a crucial role in developing comprehensive plans, refining clinical outputs, and creating advanced mock-up renderings of the hospital and its clinical spaces.
  • We Care, We Can Awareness Initiative Welcomes a New Chair: As the fundraising arm of the Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital, the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation is responsible for raising the community share of $110.4 million through the We Care, We Can campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the foundation’s history. As the Awareness Initiative rapidly progresses, the foundation proudly announced Pankaj Panchal as the new chair of the We Care, We Can Awareness Initiative.
  • Helipad Update: We are pleased to announce the upcoming operation of the temporary Bowmanville Hospital helipad. After the hospital's helipad ceased operations due to safety concerns and the need to relocate for future redevelopment, Lakeridge Health collaborated with ORNGE Air Ambulance Service and various government partners to secure a new site. Thanks to the Municipality of Clarington's support, the temporary helipad will be located on Haines Street pending final approvals from Transport Canada. This temporary site will accommodate emergency air transportation until a permanent rooftop helipad is completed as part of the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment plan.

Along with these exciting updates, with Stantec now onboard, Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario are preparing to issue a request for qualifications for a build partner to design, build and finance the project. With momentum building, there will be further updates and engagement opportunities with patients, community members, staff, and partners.
