At Lakeridge Health, patient safety is our top priority.
All patients at Lakeridge Health who require an emergency transfer to another facility are transported by land, air or a combination of both.
Oshawa Airport is currently serving as the interim helicopter landing site to serve the needs of Bowmanville Hospital. This is as a result of a temporary suspension of air ambulance service at Bowmanville Hospital by Ornge after the downwash from a helicopter landing at the hospital caused minor injuries and property damage.
Over the past year, Lakeridge Health has been working with Ornge along with municipal, provincial and federal government partners to locate, identify funding for and construct a temporary helipad site to facilitate landings in Bowmanville.
A location for the temporary helipad has been identified and a funding application made to the Ministry of Health (MOH) to support development of the site as part of the regular capital development process.
It is planned that the permanent location of the helipad will be at Bowmanville Hospital, following the expansion and redevelopment of the hospital.
Update
On June 26, the Central East Local Health Integration Network endorsed Lakeridge Health’s submission to build a temporary helipad in Bowmanville following the identification of an appropriate site, which meets the strict safety requirements of health care partners and government approvals.
Lakeridge Health is currently working with the MOH to move the capital submission forward through the five-stage MOH capital approval process.
